The opening voice belongs to a difficult 2008 moment: Melissa Ben-Ishay was fired from her position as an assistant media planner. Her brother supplied the answering voice, encouraging her to bake cupcakes at home and build a business. Melissa Ben-Ishay went on to become a founder of Baked by Melissa.

A flavor chorus arranged in small portions

Four early flavor notes—s’mores, peanut butter cup, tie-dye, and cookie dough—joined the mini, bite-size cupcake arrangement. Baked by Melissa began in New York City, and the first retail note in the chronology is a pickup window in SoHo.
